2024 National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate John Dramani Mahama has told President Akufo-Addo as he prepares to step down that it is not his power to decide who will succeed him.
The former president reminded the outgoing president that his greatest legacy to the people of Ghana is to oversee peaceful and credible elections.
Mr John Dramani Mahama spoke at a ceremony in Damongo in the Savannah region where lawns were cut for the construction of the new multi-purpose Ndeula Jakpa Palace.
The project, financed by the former president and designed by Malian architecture, consists of a palace, residences and gathering areas.
President Nana Akufo-Addo was also present at the ceremony, but left before Mr Mahama could make any comments directed at him.
“I would like to make a strong appeal to the President. This was my message to Nana Akufo-Addo. Unfortunately he has left and only our Member of State is left at the High Table.
“I appeal to the president that the greatest legacy he can leave for this country is to oversee peaceful, transparent, and credible elections.”
I would like to remind him that it is God who makes rulers and God can never choose successors. It is God who chooses his successor,” he said.
The former President said Ghana remained the vanguard of democracy in Africa and it was therefore the duty of the President to take the necessary steps to protect its image.
He condemned the incidents of violence recorded during the 2020 elections, in which about eight Ghanaians lost their lives in an incident where they were allegedly shot dead by security personnel.
Mr. Mahama particularly expressed surprise that the country had not taken steps to thoroughly investigate the matter, punish the perpetrators, and adequately compensate the families of the victims.
He promised that the families of the victims would be given just compensation once the NDC returns to power after the 2024 elections.
The new multi-purpose Ndeula Jakpa Palace project is scheduled to be completed in October 2024, with architect Ativilla as consultant and Grandeza Construction Company Limited as builder.
