The Consulate General of the High Commission of South Africa, Prof. Bobby Moroe, has described the golf tournament organized by the consulate at the Ikoyi Club 1938, at the weekend, as an event that will build friendships and better connect businesses from the countries.
Moroe said the tournament, christened the South Africa Cup, will enhance the good relations between top businessmen from South Africa and Nigeria, adding that since the maiden event held last year, the Consulate has received good feedback and intends to maintain it as part of the South. Organized to mark 30 years of freedom and democracy in South Africa and an uninterrupted diplomatic relationship with Nigeria, the South Africa Cup featured 93 amateur golfers in a one-day Stableford tournament.
At the end of the competition, Ashish Gajjar and Ambassador Pauline Onafowokan came out on top in male and female categories.
Gajjar returned 41 Stableford points to top the men’s class, while Onafowokan completed her round with 37 points.
Speaking after the event, Crossflex International CEO Tolu Adesemowo said: “The two countries have more ties that bind them than any other African country, and this event was created to look at ways to strengthen ties through the game of golf.
“It’s been a success from the start and that’s why all parties are looking forward to the event and taking its impact further than the golf course.”
The Vice Captain of the Golf Department, Babatunde Oni, on his part, said he was honored to host the strategic diplomatic event, adding that golfers and businesses in all countries are better for it.
“This event helps Nigeria and the South African businessmen represented here to better align and as a representative of the current executive members of the association, it is our job to provide the atmosphere required to achieve this.”

Among the winners were also Prakash Keswani, who claimed the surprise honor of 30th place in the event, Linda Obieze and Funmi Omo, who returned 36 and 34 stableford points to pick second and third place in the women’s category, as well as Uyi. Osemwenge and Olubanwo Latilo, who scored 40 and 39 to pick the men’s second and third positions.
