Dr Bawumia launched his election campaign on Monday, April 29th. He first met with regional leaders of the NPP to tout his agreement as vice president and his plans for Ghana if elected.
He promised, among other things, that his administration would ensure that Ghana’s import duties do not exceed those of Togo’s Lomé.
He said the Port of Lomé was a major competitor to Ghana. People usually import goods through the port of Lomé and smuggle them into Ghana.
He said Ghana would impose import duties equal to or lower than Lomé to deter smuggling.
“The Tema Port will be fully automated. We will introduce a new policy on import duties and will align the Tema Port import duty with the Lome Port import duty. The Ghanaian port will have higher tariffs than the Lome Port. This is our policy and we do not impose higher tariffs on Ghanaian ports as they are our competitors.
“If you are high, all the containers will go to Lome and be smuggled to Ghana and you will lose your income. So under the new policy, we will be lower than Lome. Or we’re going to make sure it’s the same.” That’s the policy, so there’s no need for smuggling and it helps businessmen,” Dr Bawumia said.
Touting his achievements, for the first time in the history of Ghana, electricity consumers can now purchase electricity from the comfort of their homes or wherever they are, without having to connect to the line at the offices of the Ghana Electricity Company. (electrocardiogram).
According to him, this is among a list of innovative measures introduced by the Akufo-Addo administration.
“For the first time in our history, people can buy power units on their mobile phones. Nowadays it is commonplace, but until a few years ago, to buy power you had to line up at an ECG payment center. I had to go.”
He further pointed out that his government had built more courts of justice than any other government.
He also said that the government has provided more vehicles and equipment to the Ghana Armed Forces and Police than any other government.
“Our government has implemented a number of transformative policies. For the first time in our history as a country, Ghana has successfully launched a digital national identity card that provides a unique identity to every Ghanaian.
“For the first time in Ghana’s history, Ghana has implemented mobile money interoperability between telcos’ mobile money accounts and banks’ bank accounts. It was the first country to achieve money interoperability.
This has made Ghana the fastest growing mobile money market in Africa. In fact, at the time we took office, his MoMo trade in Ghana was only 78 cedis per year. Last year, they reached GHS1.9 trillion cedis, which tells you what we have done,” he said.
