Tensions flared at May Day celebrations in the Ashanti Region on Wednesday, May 1, after employees of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) walked out during Ashanti Region Minister Simon Osei-Mensah’s speech.
The employees were protesting the minister’s decision that led to the arrest of the regional director and the minister’s failure to apologize for his actions.
Bismarck Adoma, national vice president of the ECG Senior Employees Union, declared that the company would cease all communications with the minister unless an official apology and withdrawal of the lawsuit were immediately made.
“As you know, we already have problems with him. He did things that the Workers’ Front was not happy about. Initially, the Workers’ Front demanded that we not even appear in court at all. . But we think this is our responsibility.” We don’t want to listen to him because he says he’s not ready to do everything we ask. So this is just a peaceful protest and we’re not going to listen. No matter what he says, we will return when his speech is finished. ”
In addition to this protest, ECG’s union has threatened to cut off the Ashanti Regional Minister’s private residence if it is discovered that the minister owes the company payment for electricity consumption.
The threat emerged after the Minister for Regional Affairs, Simon Osei-Mensah, denied allegations that he was paying electricity bills in some of his private residences.
Mr. Osei-Mensah revealed that apart from the Jassi residence, all other properties are on prepaid metering.
However, the Western ECG Ashanti Senior Officers Association, represented by its chairman Yusif Osmanu Abdullahi, said on Luv FM that the power company is currently adjusting meter readings at the minister’s residence.
If it turns out that he is in debt, they will not hesitate to cut off the power to his house.
