Sanuel Ai Payet, former MP of Ayensuano
Following the bribery allegations against Kwadaso MP during the recent Ejisu by-election, former Ayensuano MP Samuel Aypay has shared his views on the matter.
During an appearance on The Big Issue, which aired on City TV on May 5, 2024, Ipay referred to the justifications offered by current members of Congress for their actions.
He expressed bewilderment at the attitude of those criticizing the MP, arguing that the manner in which the bribery charges were carried out was inconsistent with rational behavior.
“You don’t have to give lunch to the election official on duty. What I struggle with is that no one would openly bribe someone like that. No one would legitimately do that. I don’t think so,” Ai said. – Mr Pei said he doubted that any reasonable individual would commit such an blatant act of bribery.
The incident in question involves a video leaked online showing an MP placing an envelope on a table in front of two election commission officials during a by-election.
The act was widely interpreted as an attempt to bribe the officers, but MPs vehemently denied this claim, insisting the act was a goodwill offer of lunch.
The dispute further escalated and the police launched an investigation to confirm the facts of the incident.
The lawmaker later apologized for the misunderstanding his actions had caused and pledged to fully cooperate with the investigation process.
