Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has disclosed that the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has seen a significant increase in revenue collection due to the drive towards government-led digitalization initiatives.
Highlighting the impact of digitalization on revenue collection, he said the company’s monthly revenue has surged from GH¢450 million to over GH¢1 billion, highlighting the effectiveness of digital tools in improving operational efficiency. Ta.
Addressing attendees at the 14th Commonwealth Regional Conference for Heads of African Anti-Corruption Agencies, Dr. Bawumia highlighted the importance of leveraging digital tools in the fight against corruption and encouraged other Member States to take Ghana’s approach. encouraged to adopt it.
The NPP flag bearer also highlighted the challenges faced during the digitization process and revealed instances of sabotage by ECG staff who introduced malware into the system.

Dr. Bawumia detailed how national security intervention was necessary to address the issue, which ultimately led to the arrest of the culprits.
“Can you believe that the people working inside the system sabotaged the system and planted ransomware throughout the system? And the system essentially collapsed.
“In the end, we had to send in the National Security Agency to find out that some of the staff in the IT department were responsible,” he said.
He recalled the disruption caused by the malware and emphasized the government’s swift response in restoring and digitizing systems.
Dr Bawumia highlighted the shift away from cash payments for electricity bills, with mobile money and electronic bank transfers now the preferred payment methods.
He expressed disbelief at the significant increase in revenue, pointing to the transformation of monthly revenue from GH¢450 million to more than GH¢1 billion as evidence of the success of the digitalisation initiative.
