Widely regarded as the greatest designer in the sport, Newey has won 13 drivers’ championships and 12 manufacturers’ championships across three teams in his career.
In an interview granted by Oyster YachtsNewey said he is ready to return to the paddock after a break.
“Like Forrest Gump said at the end of his long run, I’m feeling a little tired right now, but at some point I’ll probably go again,” Newey said.
Newey, who won 13 titles in his 20 years with the team, spoke about his long association with Red Bull and the role he and Christian Horner played in building the culture, ethos and even the layout of the building team’s.
“It was a difficult decision [to leave] because they were my family. I felt almost …not paternal but a degree of responsibility.
“But equally the team is very mature, it’s very organized. So this gives me the opportunity to be able to go away, look at new challenges, new things and let the team fly. I’m sure it can still.”
The 65-year-old admitted that the reaction to his departure surprised him.
“The Miami Grand Prix was weird because I was there in a strategy mode, so I was on the pit wall. But I wasn’t involved in any of the engineering decisions or the engineering meetings. So basically I was being toured for the press.
βI never thought it would be big news to be completely honest, I never really thought about it. To be in all the newspapers and on the TV station [television] it was almost a bit of a shock.”
