Energy storage systems offer many benefits, particularly for a country like Ghana where renewable energy production needs to increase significantly in the coming years. These systems provide a way to capture energy when it is plentiful, store it and release it when needed, ensuring a consistent and reliable supply.

Current power status
The International Energy Agency’s analysis of Ghana’s energy outlook highlights the country’s efforts to shift to cleaner energy sources.
With the aim of the government to achieve 10% renewable energy in the national mix and to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, energy storage systems could support these goals by stabilizing the grid and managing energy loads more efficiently.
Solar power + energy storage makes a great combination
Ghana’s geographic location near the equator gives it plenty of sunlight, making it an ideal candidate for solar power and energy storage.
Some notable projects are already in the works, including the collaboration between Huawei Digital Power Technologies and Meinergy Technology, which are with the goal of construction one 1GW solar installation in combination with a Storage space 500 MWh.
This project is poised to be Africa’s largest solar power and storage project, highlighting the significant potential of energy storage to enhance the efficiency and reliability of solar power.
Energy storage products on the market
Currently, there are companies like Tesla and Anker that provide energy storage solutions to consumers.
Tesla has an energy solution called Powerwall which is a rechargeable home battery system designed to store energy for future use. It can be combined with solar panels or work independently, drawing energy from the grid.
The Powerwall has energy capacity 13.5 kWh, which can be used to power a home overnight or in the event of a power outage. The system includes energy monitoring, metering and smart controls. It learns and adapts to your power usage over time and receives updates to add new features.
Anker has a storage solution called Anker SOLIX X1 Energy Storage System, a high performance energy storage solution designed to provide reliable power in various conditions.
It is designed to keep homes powered in extreme conditions, offering energy storage, energy savings and energy freedom. It is a suitable choice for those who want to store solar energy for night use or create a home microgrid for increased energy independence.
These products and solutions also extend to governments. Telsa signed an agreement with the Australian government building a ‘virtual power plant’ with the storage solution and distributing Powerwalls to residents.
Roadblock and obstacles
Challenges, however, remain. A study published in GeoJournal highlights the obstacles to the development and spread of renewable energy sources in Ghana, such as high cost of financing and insufficient technical know-how.
Despite the fact that Ghana hopes to reach 10% of solar energy generation, Ghana produces less than 1% of its energy from solar generation.
Overcoming these challenges is essential for the successful completion of energy storage systems.
