Youth Employment Authority (YEA) communications director Awal Mohammed declined to confirm whether the Auditor-General had released GH¢177 million to the Ministry of Health as payment for nursing trainee allowances.
Appearing on TV3’s New Day on Friday, May 17, when asked whether the funds were transferred to the Ministry of Health’s account, Mr Mohammed said: “I am not the Auditor-General and Accountant-General.”
This development follows an assurance of payment from the Vice President and Flag Bearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, at the International Nursing Day event to be held in Accra on May 14, 2024 .
Dr Bawumia announced that the government would release GH¢177 million to the Ministry of Health within 72 hours to settle the allowances of apprentice nurses.
The promise was made in response to a question from a final year apprentice nurse during a youth activity in the Bono East region.
“To all the nursing trainees, by Thursday of this week, the administrator will [And Accountant-General] We are transferring GH¢177 million to the Ministry of Health to pay the trainees’ allowances,” Dr Bawumia said.
Despite this assurance, when asked for an update on the release of funds, Mr. Mohammed, who also serves as NPP communicator, could not confirm the status.
He repeated, “I don’t know for a fact at this point, but what I’m telling you is that he [Dr. Bawumia] They said the money would be transferred yesterday. [Thursday, May 16]”
