Wilson underwent surgery last week and is looking at an eight-week recovery layoff July Tonga Internationals possible return to the game.
“I will definitely be fit in July to be considered for a great trip,” Wilson said in a statement.
βIt’s exciting to have back-to-back games in a Queensland jersey against two very different international teams.
“I was lucky enough to travel to Tonga last year with Australia A so I know how awesome the local crowd is. They only cheer for one team but it’s great to be on the other side of it. The ground was so full of people watching from trees”.
The Queensland tour also breaks a 28-year drought for women’s team tours with Reds midfielder Nat Wright eager to take on a new challenge in Nuku’alofa.
The Matildas really showed that the product exists for women in sport and hopefully we can do something similar in the future,β Wright said. rugby.com.au.
Tonga and Penina Pacifica midfielder Ana Ngahe said the women’s match would be “a life-changing moment for girls in the Tonga region”.
“There will be so much excitement from our players and fans. I have no doubt there will be an even higher level of support for women’s rugby in Tonga after this game. Something I am very grateful for,” Ngahe said in a statement.
The Reds-Tonga games are also big for the likes of Easts Tigers back Massimo De Lutiis, who has spent time behind more experienced team-mates throughout the Super Rugby Pacific season.
De Lutiis earned his Queensland cap in last year’s tour win over the Saitama Wild Knights and continues to work his way back into contention through the Hospital Cup after a 14-week injury lay-off.
“We’re all really excited, especially the young lads. They’re all excited to develop their skills playing against an international team with different styles of rugby,” De Lutis said. rugby.com.au.
βI definitely put my hat in the ring, but obviously it depends on the coaches. I would love to play and I would be so excited to go to Tonga.
“I was a bit jealous of the boys going to Fiji, so I’d love the chance to go.”
