The Volta Regional Executive of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has called on the Ghana Police to take action against the Publicity Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagba, for allegedly violating the country’s electoral laws.
Their call stems from an incident that occurred during the 2020 general elections when Ahiagba was allowed to vote despite admitting that his name was not on the voters’ roll for Ketu South constituency.
The call for action by the NDC follows the recent arrest of a prominent Movement for Change member, Hopeson Adoriye, on charges relating to allegations of detonating dynamite in the Volta Region during the 2016 general elections.
The Volta Regional Secretary of the NDC, Mr James Gunu, in an interview with Accra-based TV3 on Friday, May 24, stressed that like Mr Hopeson Addley, Mr Richard Ahiagba should also be arrested for his alleged involvement in electoral fraud.
He stressed the importance of thoroughly investigating all allegations to ensure the integrity of elections, and urged law enforcement agencies to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the matter and not just arrest individuals.
“Mr Richard Ahiagba, an NPP supporter, has confessed that he voted in 2020 despite not being registered to vote. This is also a confession and is as criminal as throwing dynamite. Mr Hopson was arrested and released on bail but we cannot let another confessor go because we cannot live under a selective justice system.”
“If Mr Hopceson Adoriye is guilty, then Mr Richard Ahiagba is equally guilty of electoral fraud and I expect that the Ghana Police will arrest and investigate him as he has confessed,” he said.
