Former Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu has denounced statements by Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin about the reason for a certain trip as a lie.
Amidu said he would not apologise for the comments made in the article.
This happened despite Alban Bagbin’s request to do so within seven days.
He told readers, “I only apologize for accidentally typing ‘Dubai in 2021’ instead of ‘Dubai in 2022’ in the question in paragraph 18 of my article dated 26th May 2024 and published on 27th May 2024.”
On May 28, the Speaker of Parliament denied claims by a former special prosecutor that he met with President Akufo-Addo in Dubai in 2021 before the 2022 budget was rejected.
A statement released by the Speaker’s communications unit said the allegations are baseless and unfounded and part of a deliberate attempt to tarnish the Speaker’s reputation.
The statement, signed by Mr Peter Bamfo, said Bagbin has a long record of outstanding and honest public service and will continue to put Ghana’s interests first.
“The Speaker will never cease to discharge his official duties, guide the Assembly and provide leadership in the face of insinuations, unfounded attacks and baseless allegations such as those made by Mr Amidu,” the statement added.
The clarification came following allegations made by Mr Amidu in an article criticising the National Democratic Congress (NDC), of which he is the party chairman and national chairman for the 2024 elections.
The Speaker asked Mr Amidu to retract his false and malicious statements within seven days or face further action.
But Martin Amidu seems unfazed. In a new post dated May 29, the former special prosecutor said he had “done nothing that would require him to recant, retract and apologize within seven days to Mr. Bagbin who is wasting public money in Dubai for a health issue that can be treated or managed in Ghana.”
He added, “If you [Alban Bagbin] If you think my article damages your reputation, please issue a subpoena and complaint against me in court to protect your integrity and reputation.
I can prove to the whole world that the article I wrote against the NDC, which you yourself have admitted to being a corrupt chairman, is true, legitimate and a fair comment or question on a public issue regarding the conduct of the chairman, who is a public servant, in the public interest.”
