Minister of Interior, Henry Quartey, during an unannounced visit to Kotoka International Airport (KIA) on Thursday, May 30, urged officials of the Ghana Immigration Service, Airport Security Service and Port Health Authority to maintain the prestige, professionalism and image of Ghana.
He warned them against carrying travellers’ luggage, wandering aimlessly and extorting money from travellers.
“We want to see Kotoka International Airport, the face of Ghana, change and improve to meet the best international standards and practices for all,” he said. “It’s not what you do that matters, it’s the impact. Please carry out your duties well and professionally so as not to bring embarrassment on yourself, your family and the country.”
The visit follows complaints from travellers about misconduct by some officials and a recent meeting with immigration officials at the Ghana Immigration Service Headquarters, where the Minister warned the officials to desist from carrying travellers’ luggage and to carry out their duties professionally.
To improve the situation at the airport, the minister stressed the need for officials to ensure appropriate responses, otherwise the actions of one person could cause problems that affect everyone.
He urged officials to ensure that all travelers follow proper procedures to protect each other and avoid any issues.
The Deputy Commissioner of Immigration in charge of operations, Raud Afrifa, thanked the Minister for his concern and visit and promised improvements.
The Minister was accompanied by the Acting Principal Director of the Ministry, Ms Doreen Annan, the Deputy Inspector General of Immigration in charge of Operations, Mr Raud Afrifa, Managing Director of Ghana Airports Company Ltd, Ms Yvonne Nana Afriyi Opare and several officials.
