The Ghana Atomic Energy Commission has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the United States to establish new civil nuclear cooperation to promote the safe and secure use of nuclear energy in Ghana.
This marks the establishment of a regional hub for Small Modular Reactors (SMR) in Ghana.
Small modular reactors (SMRs) are intended to complement other clean energy sources and provide stable, reliable electricity. SMRs incorporate advanced safety features, including designs to withstand extreme weather and earthquakes. They are also intended to serve as a baseload option for domestic electricity generation.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for International Security and Nonproliferation Affairs Anne Gunther announced new civil nuclear cooperation to further support the safe and secure use of nuclear energy in Ghana.
“When we build nuclear power plants in Ghana, it is important that we operate our own nuclear power plants, and education and training is part of that.”
“These include the nuclear engineers who will operate the control room and all other engineers and technical experts required to operate a nuclear power plant. These are important steps towards Ghana’s vision of nuclear power by Ghana, for Ghana.”
Meanwhile, Deputy Energy Minister John Kobina Abam Aboah Sani said the construction of nuclear power plants in Ghana would enable the country to export electricity to neighbouring countries.
“When we look globally at the issue of global warming and talk about green energy, Ghana also needs to be in a position to respond and contribute to the global challenge. Over the years, Ghana has exported electricity to neighbouring countries, but by producing more electricity domestically and utilising it more, we believe we are in a better position to export more to the region.”
