Former Minister of Information, the late John Tia Akorogo, was on Saturday buried in his hometown, Dusi, Tallenti Area of the Upper East State.
The late Mr Akorogo died on Sunday, March 24, 2024, at the Upper East Regional Hospital, Bolgatanga, aged 69, after a short illness.
He left behind four children and a wife.
Hundreds of mourners from all walks of life, including traditional authorities, party leaders, parliamentarians and former parliamentarians, members of the United Cadres Front and Cuban doctors, gathered in Dusi to pay their last respects to the former parliamentarian for the Talensi constituency.
A delegation from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), including its leader and former president, John Dramani Mahama, party chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia and other MPs and party members, attended the private funeral for the family.
In his eulogy, the former President commended the late Akorogo for his immense contribution to the growth of the party and Ghana at large through his service in various sectors and institutions.
He said the former minister was a true cadre and party member, committed to the December 31 Revolution and played a key role under the Fourth Republic.
“We all became successful as MPs because we had seniors like John Teare who held our hands and taught us the tenets of being a good MP,” he said.

The former president added that everything has its time, and that he “prays that God will accept our prayers and grant our comrade entry into heaven.”
Mr Tia was born on September 23, 1954 in Gambaga in the North East.
He attended Zobzia Primary School and the Local Government Secondary School in Gambaga before enrolling at Tamale Secondary School where he completed his secondary education from 1969 to 1974, obtaining his GCE Ordinary Level.
He then went on to obtain a Diploma in Journalism from the Ghana Institute of Journalism in 1980, and further obtained a Certificate in Business Management in 2006, a Diploma in Public Administration in 2007 and a Bachelor of Public Administration from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) in 2008.
Mr Akorogo has been involved in grassroots politics since the 1980s and was active in trade union activities between 1985 and 1992, serving as branch president and member of the National Executive Committee of the Civil Service Workers Union.

In 1982, he became spokesman for the Upper East Regional Secretariat of the People’s and Workers’ Defence Committees established by the Provisional National Defence Council.
Mr Akorogo was elected Member of Parliament for Tallenti Constituency on the National Democratic Congress (NDC) ticket in the 1992 general elections and retained his seat in subsequent elections, until losing in 2012 to Robert N. Doormen Mosole of the New Patriotic Party.
The late Mr Akorogo was appointed Minister of Information in 2009 and served in that position until 2014 when he was appointed by former President John Mahama as Ghana’s Ambassador to Cuba, a position he held until 2016 when the NDC lost power.
The former minister, who was also a journalist, worked at the GNA office in Bolgatanga between 1982 and 1990.
He was active in various fields and was a member of the National Council of Elders representing the Upper East Region until his death.
