Dr. Danso Adjei popularly known as Kofi is the man who made the name famous.
Like you, Kofi Adoma Nwanwani, presenter and CEO of KOFI TV and Radio, was intrigued by the headline. Nick Kofi Danso Adjei echoed Nick’s sentiments when he asked him why the name has become more popular in countries like Spain than here in Ghana.
But that’s how a January 2023 interview with the man KOFI TV described as “the richest man in Ghana” came about.
Returning to the question of how the name became so popular in Spain, Kofi Danso (now Dr Danso Adjei) explained that he decided to just go with that name, saying thankfully, with hard work and maintaining a good reputation, it was only natural that his name, which identifies him as a Ghanaian born Friday, would become a household name abroad.
“I am called Kofi because I was born on a Friday. I was previously known as Kofi Danso Ajayi but I was also given a foreign name, Nick. So when I went there, everyone started calling me Kofi because it was easier to pronounce.
“And the white people liked my name so I went there with just one name – Kofi – and people started to know that name. And also, if you live abroad and don’t live a good life, your name disappears, but if you live a good life your name stays. So my name resonated so well with the people that when they see you they mistake you for me,” he told KOFI TV.
He further explained how he made his way to Spain in the late 1980s with the help of his uncle and how the then 17-year-old boy has worked hard to get to the level he is at today.
He also recalled that they were among the first people to bring floor tiles and kitchen cabinets to Ghana.
“At that time, we were sourcing floor tiles and different things from Guangzhou and selling them to factories in Spain. So when we bagged the goods there, people thought they were from Spain but they were actually coming from somewhere else. This prompted us to bring some into Ghana,” he added.
Through hard work and perseverance, Dr. Danso Adjei is now known as the owner of a number of businesses including Ghana Link and Nick Petroleum.
