Last year, the Recording Academy unveiled its plans for the African continent after years of backlash from music industry executives and fans.
At the 66th Grammys, Africa received its own category for the first time in the Recording Academy’s 65-year history: Best African Performance.
Tyla winning the inaugural award set the stage for the Academy to roll out its new plans for the continent.

Dentaa Amoateng talks about Grammy’s new plans for Africa
On June 11, The Recording Academy announced its plans to create an African version of the prestigious awards program.
This comes after the Academy signed special agreements with its African stakeholders including Rwanda, Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa.
Ghana missed out on becoming one of the founding members of the African arm of the Grammys despite several visits by top Recording Academy executives including Harvey Mason Jr and Panos A Panay.
This means that Ghana, unlike the four founding countries, will not be able to host the award ceremonies or set up a Grammy center in the country.
He said there had been talks, but the final agreement between the country and the Academy had not been signed.
In a recent interview, Lady Dentaa Amoateng, MBE of Ghana, who has been a senior adviser on the Recording Academy’s efforts to break into Africa, explain why Ghana was left out of the Grammy’s African plans. He further explained, saying:

I think it’s more than resources. There are a few things the country will need to be a part of this. Looking at everything that is happening in Ghana right now, it was not possible.
The Recording Academy’s Panos A Panay founded Grammy’s Africa branch, which will “foster a truly global music community where creators at every stage of their career and from every corner of the world have the resources and support they need to thrive ».
Berla Munid hosts the African Candidates Brunch
Earlier, YEn.com.gh reported that TV personality Berla Mundi had recounted her best moments as host of the 66th African Grammy Nominees Brunch in the US.
At the event, the famous socialite was spotted with top stars including Busta Rhymes and Recording Academy executives.
