A group of former Capital, Municipal and District Executive Officers (MMDCEs) have issued an ultimatum to the government, demanding payment of retirement allowances that have been outstanding for three years.
The group comprises 134 MMDCEs who were relieved of their duties following President Akufo-Addo’s 2021 cabinet reshuffle and claim that their letters of appointment guarantee them three months consolidated salary and induction grant as part of their severance pay.
Affected former MMDCE spokesperson, Mr Leo Nelson Ajidoga, who was previously MCE for Akatsi South, expressed the dissatisfaction of all, saying the outstanding amount was over GH₵100,000 per person.
“It will be three years but that is because we left the administration in October 2021, it will not be a full three months and we will not be paid the full inauguration grant.”
“I think they will collect a little over 100,000 cedis on top of the arrears. Then there will be taxes. That’s why I say I cannot give an exact figure at the moment. But all together it will be more than 100,000 cedis,” he was quoted as saying in a report by www.myjoyonline.com.
He stressed that despite their repeated petitions, the government has not addressed their grievances.
Ajidoga warned that delay in disbursement of these funds could have dire consequences for the electoral campaign of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) as the former MMDCEs do not have the financial resources to actively participate.
He expressed the sentiment that many former MMDCEs would not support the 2024 election campaign unless their dues were paid.
“We see that most of the former MMDCES who have been relieved of their jobs are resentful and bitter. The only thing we can do is for them to take our money and bring us back into the mainstream.”
“That’s what I’m shouting about. But I know that without this, most of us wouldn’t support this campaign. But what we want is for us to go somewhere and not have to depend on them for fuel to run our cars. Give it to us so that we can follow the campaign team wherever they go and contribute to the campaign work. That’s what we want.”
“Maybe any DCE who wants to go will say if I go there I will have to rely on this because I don’t have money for fuel and it will be a disgrace.
“That discretionary power has left most of the lawmakers with their hands tied. That’s why we are saying please pay us this amount so that we can participate in this campaign. That’s what we’re saying,” he said.
