A Ph.D at Missouri S&T. The engineering management student has been recognized as one of the top 10 inspiring women in Mining Ghana.
“Receiving this honor is inspiring to me, and I hope it will be inspiring to other women,” says Rosebella Osei. “It helps to know that my work at this point has been recognized and I’m excited to do even more work to improve mining moving forward.”
The honor was presented at the 2024 Women in Mining Ghana conference earlier this month.
Osei, who moved to S&T’s Rolla, Missouri campus to begin her doctoral studies in January 2024, is studying engineering management with a focus on continuous improvement in mine operations. It examines change management strategies and examines how artificial intelligence and robotics could benefit mining.
From 2014 to 2023, Osei worked in business improvement roles in the mining industry in Ghana and has served as Chief Strategy Officer for International Women in Mining (WIM) since 2022. She also helps oversee the International WIM Alliance, the which brings together WIM organizations worldwide with a common platform.
Her mining and business activities have taken her to locations around the world including Canada, China, England, France, Germany, Ghana, the Netherlands, Nigeria, the United Arab Emirates and the United States.
Osei holds a Master Black Belt in Lean Six Sigma. She obtained an Honors Master’s Degree in International Business Management from the University of the West of England, where she also won an Airbus Award as the top student in her class. Her degree in business administration is from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Ghana.
“Mining has evolved so much over the years,” he says. “With all the new technology being used in the field, women can make important contributions that don’t require the physicality once associated with the industry. I hope to continue to inspire young women to explore this field and see where it takes them.”
Osei’s research supervisors are Drs. Venkat Allada, professor of engineering management and systems engineering, and Dr. Samuel Frimpong, S&T vice president for graduate education and professor of mining and explosives engineering;
