The Medical Director of the Trauma Specialist Hospital in Winneba, Dr Pra George Kwame, has released an incident report into the incident of a patient who was allegedly abandoned in the bush by the hospital.
According to a report by Dr George Kwame, the patient concerned was an unidentified person who sustained injuries in a hit and run incident that occurred on May 29 in Gomoa-Ojobi area.
The National Ambulance Service informed the hospital of the patient’s condition and a social welfare officer called to check whether the hospital was ready to accept the patient.
In his report to the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr George Kwame said the patient was admitted immediately on arrival and received thorough care and compassionate treatment from hospital staff.
The patient received the care he needed, even though he had no family to cover the medical expenses.
The incident report aims to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the admission and treatment of patients at trauma hospitals amid growing public concern over allegations of abandonment.
“After necessary tests were completed, both the patient’s lower legs were placed in plaster (POP) casts due to a tibia fracture. The hospital, as always, took full responsibility for the patient’s food, medication and housekeeping.”
“The patient was admitted for six days and was finally discharged on June 3, 2024 after being declared healthy. Medical records have been submitted as evidence,” the report reads in part.
