What can Brown do for you?
For those looking for a big story at the 2024 British Open, 29-year-old English golfer Dan Brown delivered on Thursday. Light on recent tournament success, Brown grabbed the lead from Shane Lowry with a birdie on No. 18 to enter Round 2 as the outright leader.
Brown was determined and methodical throughout the afternoon, and perhaps even surgical on his later holes: He wasted no time getting in for birdie, perhaps signaling to the rest of the field that he’s in the right frame of mind heading into the rest of the tournament.
Heading into Round 2, Brown will have to contain Lowry and keep the good juju going β and, he says, maybe keep his family and friends from feeling too jazzed.
USA TODAY Sports will provide live updates, highlights and more from the 2024 Open Championship below.
Justin Rose makes his move, Scotty Scheffler is within striking distance
Justin Rose is off to a great start in his second round. After a beautiful approach on the 7th, Rose easily birdied to move within three shots of the lead. Scottie Scheffler, seeking his third major championship, birdied the 18th but is still five shots off the pace heading into the weekend.
Shane Lowry ends the second round with a two-shot lead

Tiger Woods misses the cut, finishes 14-over par
Tiger Woods had two days to forget at the Open Championship at Royal Troon Golf Course in Troon, Scotland. After shooting an 8-over 79 during the opening round, it was more of the same on Friday for the 15-time major winner as he missed the cut in his third straight major, finishing at 14-over par. The last time that happened was in 2015, when he failed to make the weekend at the US Open, the British Open and the PGA Championship.
Shane Lowry takes sole ownership of the lead role
Shane Lowry birdies the 16th hole to take the early lead once again. Dan Brown sits a step back. Meanwhile, Justin Rose sits three strokes off the lead after a birdie at the par-5 4th. Rose is the only golfer in the field to not birdie a hole out of 22 holes.

Howling wind at Royal Troon
It wouldn’t be a British Open without the elements coming into play. And, almost suddenly, the wind affects the game around Royal Troon. It will make the second half of this second round quite interesting.
Bogey on No. 2 for Justin Thomas
Justin Thomas started the second round in a tie for third place at 3 under, but the two-time PGA Championship winner is already one back.
After saving a tie on No. 1, Thomas bogeyed the 389-yard par-4 hole on No. 2. Thomas remains in a tie for third at 2 under.

Chaos at No.11 for Shane Lowry
Shane Lowry is in trouble on No. 11. He hits his second shot into a bush, cursing at a cameraman. Lowry then drops in and hits a temporary on the green to 20 feet in what would likely lead to a bogey. However, a spectator found his second shot in the middle of the bush. More than 20 minutes later, Lowry takes a drop and hits it to the front of the green. He then makes two shots for a costly double bogey and moves back into a share of the lead with Daniel Brown.
Patrick Cantlay climbs the leaderboard
Patrick Cantlay has perhaps the best round of the day. The American birdies No. 10 to take him to 4 under for the round and 2 under for the championship. He moves within five moves of leader Shane Lowry.

Tiger Woods comes out of the gate to start the second round
