Telecel Ghana has hosted over 100 young girls from the Northern, Eastern and Savanna regions for a day of ICT training and mentoring at its headquarters in Accra.
The annual Girls in ICT Open Day is an initiative of the Ministry of Communications and Digitization to inspire and educate young women about the skills and opportunities available in the technology sector.
The girls were welcomed by members of the Senior Management Team and then received training on basic data analytics, robotics, cyber security, networks and digital transformation along with mentoring sessions from Women in Technology at Telecel Ghana, to gain valuable insights into the world of technology and innovation.
Mentoring sessions featured female tech team leaders who shared their experiences and offered mentorship to aspiring young girls, emphasizing the importance of upskilling, collaboration and innovation for success in the tech industry.
“We believe that empowering young women with technology is essential to creating a more inclusive and innovative future,” said Ms. Juliana Ametorwogo, President of Women in Technology, Telecel Ghana.
“By hosting these amazing young women in hands-on workshops and mentoring sessions, we hope to inspire them to pursue careers in technology and become leaders in the digital world.”
The initiative, aligned with the global push to bridge the gender gap in technology, provided a platform for girls to explore various aspects of digital technology.
Participants had the opportunity to participate in hands-on exercises such as building simple robots and developing basic coding projects.
These hands-on activities sparked creativity and ignited a passion for technology in young girls.
Director of Legal and External Affairs, Augusta Andrews, said the interactive and hands-on sessions will go a long way in nurturing this new talent and help create a more inclusive tech ecosystem.
“Investing in improving young women’s digital capabilities is a step in the right direction towards developing a skilled and diverse future workforce that benefits not only business but the country.
“We believe in inspiring these girls to pursue careers in technology and become leaders in the digital age,” added Augusta.
Participants expressed their appreciation and renewed enthusiasm for technology after taking advantage of the opportunity to learn new technological and digital skills and gain exposure to the technology industry.
The successful hosting of the Girls in ICT Open Day demonstrates Telecel Ghana’s commitment to partnerships, corporate social responsibility and its role in empowering the next generation of leaders.
