THE Ethiopian Petroleum and Energy Authority (EPA) announced that it is developing a national electrification strategy to accelerate the progress of electric vehicles (EVs) in the country.

The announcement was made at a panel discussion organized by the EPA in collaboration with the Ethio-German Energy Partnership, focusing on the intersection of electric vehicles and the green economy.
EPA Director General Sahrla Abdulahi he emphasized that the government is undertaking various initiatives to transform the petroleum sector into a reliable electrification sector, contributing to the socio-economic development of the country.
He said there will be a national steering committee set up and efforts to identify opportunities to incentivize private sector engagement in the electric vehicle industry.

Mintesnot Gizaw (Asst. Prof.), researcher and lecturer in Renewable Energy Sources at the Department of Environmental Engineering of AAU emphasized the importance of strengthening the EV-green economy grid.
He noted that Ethiopia spends approx $4.6 billion annually for fossil fuels, affecting the import-export balance.
