Fentuo Tahiru — one of Ghana’s most prominent sports broadcasters and covering his first Olympics — was recently featured on WRAL to begin his career at Elon.
Tahiru is Chief Sports Editor for The Multimedia Group LimitedGhana’s largest media company, and hosts radio and television programs while overseeing sports content on the company’s platforms. It is one of two Ghanaian broadcasters accredited to cover the 2024 Olympics – a lifelong dream.
“I’m not just reporting,” Tahiru told WRAL. “I am also an ambassador for my country because there are not many of us here. Well, it’s just me and I have to use every little chance I get to tell people about my country in Paris.”
Tahiru graduated from the University of Ghana in 2010 with degrees in English and Psychology and received a scholarship to attend Elon for his senior year. At the time, his university did not have a journalism program, and Elon is where he took his first journalism classes and worked one of his first radio jobs — at WSOE. Along with several courses in the School of Communications, Tahiru completed his studies in English and psychology at Elon College, College of Arts and Sciences.
After graduation, he taught school while interning every night at a radio station. A rival station eventually offered him a full-time job. His career and profile have risen ever since, covering FIFA World Cups and other sporting leagues and events around the world. He has been a sports editor at Multimedia Group Limited since 2022.
“Elon was a life-changing experience,” Tahiru recently said in an interview with Elon. “The connections I made there were powerful and Elon gave me more confidence in myself that fueled my desire to pursue my sports broadcasting dream.”
