Kobbie Mainoo is reportedly being targeted by the Ghana Football Association for a possible switch of allegiance on the international stage.
The Manchester United starlet has burst into the limelight recently with a string of displays for Erik ten Hag’s side that belies his youth, rightly attracting plenty of attention.
His performances in recent years have won him widespread praise and after scoring a dramatic 97th-minute winner against Wolves on Thursday, he was labeled a “generational talent” by team-mate Rasmus Hojlund.
Another teammate, Bruno Fernandes, was also quick to heap on the praise, claiming he had noticed Mainoo’s ability “two or three years ago”, and now the Ghana FA has started to take notice.
A member of the Ghana FA told The Times that they are already looking at Mainoo and are “interested” in getting him to turn out for the Three Lions for the African giants.
“The Ghana Football Association is keen to monitor, attract and convince all qualified talent for its various national teams,” said Randy Abi, of the Ghana FA’s executive board.
“Kobbie is certainly one of those incredible talents and the Club will love to work with him and many others like him at home and abroad.”
The player has represented England at three different youth levels to date, earning six Under-19 caps. However, he is yet to make his senior debut – something the English FA and Gareth Southgate will surely be aware of.
Given his impressive displays for United in recent years, he could start to push Southgate to include him in his squads.
With the Three Lions in action at the European Championships later this year, a string of similar strong performances could leave him with an outside chance of a call-up.
Mail Sport reported in November that the FA were confident of keeping Mainoo.
Ghana may be looking to rebuild after a poor showing at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Chris Hughton’s side failed to make it past the group stage, with the former Brighton boss duly sacked.
After scoring a stunning goal to seal a 4-3 win over Wolves on Thursday night, the player admitted: “It’s a dream come true in such a difficult place.
“They had a good home run here so we needed the win but I haven’t got it yet – I still feel like I’m dreaming to be honest so you’ll have to give me a second!”
“Starting to play in the Premier League for my boyhood club was amazing.
“Now I’m just looking to have a good streak and keep winning games, keep winning games and have some momentum.”
