The Africa Cup of Nations has reached the semi-finals as Ivory Coast host for the second time in the competition’s history.
Of the 24 nations taking part in the Afcon, Senegal were the pre-tournament favourites, but the reigning champions have been toppled amid a flurry of stunning results. Previous losing finalists Egypt have also been eliminated, as have World Cup semi-finalists Morocco, who many had tipped to go this far.
After a dramatic quarter-final set where Nigeria sneaked through, South Africa won on penalties and Ivory Coast needed an equalizer in the 90th minute and a winner in the 120th minute to progress, the line-up for the semi-final is: Nigeria v South Africa and Côte d’Ivoire Ivory Coast v DR Congo.
The tournament is officially Afcon 2023, despite being held in 2024, after being postponed for several months due to concerns about Senegal’s heat during the summer months.
