The National Cathedral Board of Directors is not backing down on its efforts to become a national monument as renewed calls for support are made.
Member of the Management Committee and Executive Director of the Ministry of Salt and Light, Dr. Joyce Ally, made a passionate appeal to Ghanaians to support the project.
In a video posted on the cathedral’s page on X (formerly Twitter), she called on Christians to especially see the cathedral as a manger for Jesus Christ and to contribute to it.
“The cathedral is a central theme for us Christians in this country. Wouldn’t it be great even to see it as a fodder for the invasion of the earth by the Lord Jesus Christ,” she advised.
The cathedral, scheduled to be inaugurated on March 6, 2024, will be the fulfillment of a promise President Akufo-Addo made to God before winning the 2016 election.
Once completed, the 5,000-seat cathedral will provide a sacred space for the nation’s formal religious activities and symbolize the faith’s significant contribution to nation-building.
The $100 million project, designed by renowned architect David Adjaye, has been widely criticized by many Ghanaians who believe it has the wrong priorities.
Condemnation deepened after the government had to demolish some state-owned land, including the judge’s accommodation in Accra’s Ridge, to make way for construction.
But as Akufo-Addo’s tenure draws to a close, the project is still at a basic level.
