Former special prosecutor Martin Amidu is skeptical about the impact that former President John Mahama’s running mate will have on the party aiming to win the general election in December.
In his view, Professor Jane Nana Opoku-Agyemang may not be of interest to young people considering her age.
Amidu’s comments came after the flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) named her as his running mate for the 2024 elections.
He submitted her name to the party’s national executive committee and council of elders for scrutiny.
However, Martin Amidu in his post said he hoped that the selection of Professor Opoku Agyemang would be magic for the opposition.
He feared her choice could affect the fate of the NDC in the 2028 general elections.
“If the prospective candidate submitted to the NDC by John Mahama in his February 27, 2024 communication is Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang, she will be tested in the 2028 elections if the NDC wins. Let’s hope that he will be stronger than another young candidate of the NPP, as already arrogantly predicted, in the 2024 elections. It has everything to do with Nana Akufo-Addo’s failure as a leader,” Amidu added.
The former Attorney General called on the NDC leadership to be “strategic” ahead of the December elections.
“The NDC, in its strategic and tactical planning and assessment, has determined that in the current chaotic economic system, for the first four years after 2024, who will put money in the pockets of the people as part of the NDC? Let’s not forget that this is not an easy term.Recently, a young lawyer tried to mislead voters in the media.
“Even if John Mahama were to run, the 2028 election will not be a bye for him, especially if the NDC has to present a new face. This is being done on the assumption that the NDC can win the 2024 presidential election. That is not certain,” Amidu said.
