The Minister of Youth and Sports, Mustafa Usif says the legacy of hosting the 13th African Games in Ghana will positively impact sports in Ghana.
Ghana has attracted rave reviews after building world-class facilities to host the multi-discipline event in Accra and after a successful event that won international acclaim, the Sports Minister is already looking beyond the event.
“The 13th African Games, Accra 2023 has come to an end but for us in Ghana, it has just begun because the legacy of the 13th African Games lives on,” Mustafa Usif said at the closing ceremony.
“For Ghana, the legacy goes beyond the Games as the wonderful multi-purpose infrastructure we have invested in the University of Ghana and Borteyman will have a huge impact on our sporting development,” he added.
“Never in the history of our country, have we had such world-class sports facilities for multiple sports disciplines. But thanks to the 13th African Games, Accra 2023, driven by the remarkable vision of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the commitment of our government, Ghana now has these facilities.”
“This is a game changer. And combined with the multi-purpose regional sports stadiums our government is building across the country, our sports will never be the same again.”
The government built several world-class facilities at the Borteyman Sports Comples, including three multi-purpose domes for indoor games, tennis courts, an aquatics center with a separate warm-up pool, a soccer field, among others.
At the University of Ghana, the government also completed the stadium there, which had been abandoned, built a mundo standard athletics track and a warm-up track next to the stadium, as well as the largest rugby field in West Africa.
In addition to building modern facilities, the government has also procured equipment for the various sports disciplines, which will be handed over to the various federations to help local development and competitions.
“This is the legacy, Mr. President, and posterity will never forget your government’s significant impact on Ghanaian sports and contribution to keeping the flame of the African Games burning.”
