The complex was one of the major facilities that hosted some of the major sporting events during the recent African Games held in Ghana from March 8 to 23, 2024.
However, while opinions differ on the NSA’s ability to adequately manage the facility, it has now emerged that the Authority has already been tasked with this task.
“What we do know is that it is [Borteyman Sports Complex] handed over to the NSA” said Delphina Quaye, as reported by Joy Sports.
“After the Games, I approached the NSA with the letter asking us to use the pool for our games. What they said was that it wouldn’t be free. We acknowledge that, but as of now, we have not heard from them, it’s been two weeks.”
The president of the Ghana Swimming Association further praised the quality of the swimming facilities at the sports complex, saying; “The pool is definitely certified. It’s an Olympic-sized pool, internationally recognized and for us at the federation, we think it’s a step forward to achieve big goals in the future.”
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Youth and Sports had earlier said that the Borteyman Sports Complex would be converted into a University for Sports Development after the African Games.
Sector Minister Mustapha Ussif said in March that the move was geared towards ensuring that the facilities at the complex are well maintained.
“To ensure that the facilities are well maintained for the continued benefits of the good people of our country, the facilities at Borteyman will be converted into a University for Sports Development after the Games…to ensure the sustainability and legacy of these Games.” he said.
The multi-million dollar Borteyman Sports Complex currently has many facilities including hostels, football pitches, a cafeteria and a medical centre.
This was noted by the Minister of Sports “This will attract local and foreign sports federations to camp in Ghana and prepare for various competitions.”
Mustapha Ussif also explained that the conversion of the facilities into a Sports Development University will “position Ghana as a sports hub in the West African sub-region”.
