Late on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, leaders of the Nungua Traditional Council stormed the Coconut Grove Regency Hotel in Accra, demanding the release of 16-year-old Queen Mother Naa Ayemuede.
The teenager is currently in state custody following an engagement ceremony with a 63-year-old priest.
They said they believed the 16-year-old queen, Naa Ayemuede, was being held in the hotel and wanted her immediate release to perform customary ceremonies.
“We have been here since the morning hoping that either the Ministry of Gender or the Ministry of Chieftaincy would release the queen mother on our behalf. We looked into the authorities and expected our Queen Mother to be released at this point, following their promises, but nothing seems to be being done,” one of the protesters told 3news. Told.
The protesters include the queen, the queen dowager, priests, young people and hundreds of traditional council leaders. They are demanding the release of Naa Ayimuede, a 16-year-old girl whose alleged engagement to 63-year-old Gbolubu Wolomo has sparked controversy in the past few weeks.
Speaking to 3news, Jasetse Nii Ai Anaconte called on the President of the Republic, Nana Akufo-Addo, to intervene in the matter. He insisted that the investigation so far had found no violations of the country’s laws and that the girl should therefore be released.
“I have full respect for the president, but I’m very aware that he’s not aware of everything that’s going on right now. He may have heard it, but the problems, the incarceration, the Whether it’s the detention or the arrest, we may not have been aware of the reasons or issues that kept our Queen Mother in custody for 17 days, but we don’t know what the heck is going on. “Isn’t it the parents who protect their daughters?”
Meanwhile, protesters said they had a tradition of performing and would not leave until the Queen Mother was released.
