Three-time boxing world champion Azumah Nelson is returning to the ring after retiring from the sport many years ago.
The 65-year-old former WBC Super Featherweight’s unexpected comeback is for a special purpose.
In an unprecedented display of sports diplomacy, boxing legend Azumah Nelson will take on the European Union Ambassador to Ghana, Irchad Razaaly, in an exhibition bout.

The fight scheduled for May 4 at the iconic Bukom Boxing Arena, “Diplo Rumble: Empowering Youth Through Sports”, will highlight the EU Month celebrations in May.

According to the organisers, the exhibition match is part of efforts to highlight the boxing talent of young boxers from the famous Bukom neighborhood and highlight the role of sports in youth empowerment.
“The Delegation of the European Union to Ghana is proud to announce a series of events highlighting the importance of youth and skills development in the European Union-Ghana partnership,” said Ambassador Razaaly GNA.
Other activities for EU month
In addition to the spectacle of boxing, the month-long celebrations will include various activities to promote dialogue and cooperation between the EU and Ghana.
Notably, an annual partnership dialogue scheduled for May 6 will bring together key stakeholders from both sides, including Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, ambassadors of EU member states and representatives from various government institutions such as the Ministries of Finance, Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration.

Mr. Razaaly added that the dialogue will help address critical issues such as trade, security and sustainable development, with the aim of strengthening the relationship between Ghana and the EU.
This will be followed by the annual Europe Day reception, an event billed as one of the largest diplomatic gatherings in Accra, scheduled for May 9 at the EU Ambassador’s residence.
Diplo Rumbe flyers are already circulating on social media with details of the match. Media personality Ameyaw Debrah shared the flyer on his Instagram page.
