National Democratic Congress (NDC) 2024 presidential candidate John Mahama has warned President Akufo-Addo as he prepares to step down from office against any attempt to dictate to his successor.
In a direct message to the outgoing president, Mr. Mahama stressed that Mr. Akufo-Addo’s primary responsibility is to oversee a peaceful and credible electoral process.
Mr Mahama stressed that neither the NDC nor the people of Ghana will tolerate any attempt by Mr Akufo-Addo to impose his preferred successor on the nation.
He reassured that both the NDC and the people of Ghana are well prepared for the upcoming December elections and are fully committed to upholding the will of the people.
In a social media post on Monday, April 29, Mr Mahama urged Akufo-Addo to ensure a smooth transition of power and hand over the country at peace. He warned against any actions that could undermine national stability.
“He also recently stated that someone who lost in a past election cannot succeed him. This suggests an arrogant nature and suggests an inherently anti-democratic character. This undermines the fundamental principles of a peaceful transition of power.”

President Akufo-Addo has reiterated his opposition to handing over the presidency to his predecessor, John Dramani Mahama.
In his address to Wa chiefs and people, President Akufo-Addo thanked them for their support during his tenure.
He informed the Supreme Chief of the Waala Traditional Area, Nah Husseini Seidu Perpuo IV, of his intention to return to the area with Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the standard bearer of the New Patriotic Party, as his successor.
President Akufo-Addo has made it clear that he has no intention of handing over power to John Dramani Mahama, who was defeated and removed from office in 2016.
The stance echoed Mr Mahama’s warning to President Akufo-Addo to prioritize peace and stability in the country.
