Martin Amidu
Former Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu opened Pandora’s box during his tenure in investigating the £5 million Airbus scandal involving National Democratic Congress (NDC) leader John Mahama.
Martin Amidu said he chose not to reveal many details about the investigation ahead of the 2020 elections due to sensitivities surrounding the identity of “government official 1” implicated in the scandal.
He stressed that the government official in question was none other than John Mahama.
Amidu revealed that former President John Dramani Mahama and his brother Samuel Adamu Mahama Foster had concealed information, including their alleged involvement in the scandal.
He strongly believes that the fact that the court heard the charges against Samuel Adam Mahama Foster and his British friend in the Airbus SE-Ghana case, which led to the issuance of arrest warrants for them and the Interpol red notice, shows beyond a doubt that Government Official 1 is his brother, John Dramani Mahama. Mahama was the Vice President and later President of Ghana at the time he looted almost £5 million in bribes from the public treasury.
Amidu also said the OSP refused to call former President Mahama for questioning because it did not want to be seen as “a campaign tool for the NPP government.”
He therefore challenged the former president and his party, the NDC, to reopen the investigation and convene “Scotland Yard” if they believe they are innocent of any crime if the NDC comes to power again.
The former special counsel also revealed how he led the Airbus SE investigation, showing OSP’s chief investigators the hotels and rented apartments where Samuel Adam Mahama Foster and his British friends lived, including a government-owned property sold to Michael Abu Sakala Foster that Samuel Adam Foster claimed was his residence.
The Airbus scandal involved European aircraft manufacturer Airbus being accused of paying bribes in Ghana during the sale of three military aircraft.
Former President John Dramani Mahama was also one of the senior government officials allegedly involved in the scandal, and Amidu suggested that the reference to “senior government officials” in the scandal referred to the former president.
