Former National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, has insisted that John Dramani Mahama did not lose the 2020 general elections.
Despite the election result and subsequent ruling in favour of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, Ampofo believes Mahama won the election.
The Supreme Court unanimously dismissed a petition challenging the ruling on March 4, 2021, finding it lacking merit.
In an interview Channel One TV Ofosu Ampofo, along with Umaru Sanda Amadu, firmly believed that Mahama would win the 2020 elections.
“I still believe that President Mahama should not have lost the 2020 elections because if everything had gone smoothly, we would have formed a government.”
Ampofo cited irregularities in the electoral process, including the incident in Ablekuma Central, and alleged that NDC supporters were intimidated and assaulted by state security agents.
He said that it was only because of the vigilance of its supporters that the NDC was able to garner many votes despite these challenges.
βIn Ablekuma Central for example, a lot happened during the declaration process, but Accra is Accra and our people stood their ground.
“Some of us suffered bullet wounds and one died, but they still insisted on doing all the right things. And so we won our seat in Ablekuma Central constituency. If we had been intimidated, we would have lost the seat. This is a lesson. People were vigilant, otherwise we would not have garnered so many votes.”
“But there are situations that are beyond your control. It’s difficult, especially when state security agencies that are supposed to be impartial decide to brutalize people here and there to please the crowds of the current administration,” he said.
