A second-year student at Christian Service College has suffered head injuries after being assaulted, allegedly by supporters of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), in Kumasi.
The incident occurred at a public lecture organised to mark the 50th anniversary of the school, where former Chancellor and 2024 NDC flag-bearer, Mr John Mahama, spoke.
The victim, Nana Boakye, is said to be an organiser of the NPP student wing, TESCON, and was allegedly refuting Mr Mahama’s description of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s election campaign as a “concert party” in his speech.
The NDC leader spoke at the Christian Service University and heavily criticised his rival candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia of the NPP.
“Ghanaians are in dire straits and this is not the time for comedy. This is not the time for concert parties where you are giving away imaginary cows,” Mahama said.
While many at the public lecture applauded the criticism, NPP TESCON organisers at the university were not happy and ridiculed it.
Nana Boakye reportedly refuted the statement at a hearing with those present, but one NDC supporter did not take his remarks lightly.
Nana Boakye narrated what happened to him.
“I answered, ‘Mama wo boana wo bi3wi’ [Meaning Mahama you’re lying, you will lose]After that, a muscular man came up to me and warned me to be careful. So I asked him, ‘What did you do?’ The moment I asked him, he came straight up and slapped me in front of the former president. So I walked out of the auditorium and when I got to the main door of the auditorium, I heard another slap. I couldn’t see anything because of the sound, but I also saw a guy grab my hands backwards and start hitting me in the stomach, head, etc.”
The second-year communications student had his head bandaged and his arm in a splint.
Attempts to rescue him proved futile as enraged party members stormed the office where he was being held.Meanwhile, the NPP in Ashanti Region has said it is appalled by the situation.
Spokesman Paul Yandow expressed disappointment.
The victim has yet to file a police report.
