Addis Ababa, 30 June 2024 (ENA) Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced today that Ethiopia has submitted its bid to host the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and that the country is conducting preparatory activities.
Prime Minister Abiy had a friendly match early this morning with some of Africa’s football legends who are in Ethiopia to participate in the Shenen Africa Festival.
Speaking at the occasion, the Prime Minister said Ethiopia has thrown its hat in the ring to host the prestigious Africa Cup of Nations.
Acknowledging that the Africa Cup of Nations requires complex procedures, the Prime Minister underlined that Ethiopia is stepping up its unified efforts to realize its request.
He pointed out that a thorough discussion was held on the matter with the president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
Prime Minister Abiy also believed that the hosting of the Africa Cup of Nations in Ethiopia will definitely boost Ethiopian football.
In addition, AFCON will also bring great benefit to the development of the country’s tourism sector.
Therefore, the current visit of legendary African footballers to Ethiopia, who are known for playing in the English Premier League and various European clubs, will create a great opportunity to promote Ethiopia’s potential in this field.
According to him, Ethiopia is working hard through its diplomats to host AFCON and massive discussions have started, including with the CAF president.
“If we succeed in these efforts, our people will be informed and we will deal with the hotel and stadium arrangements as well as other necessary preparations,” Prime Minister Abiy said.
Citing the Great Run’s important role in promoting Ethiopia’s image to the entire world, he further affirmed that work in various sports fields, including equestrian, will be strengthened.
Former African footballers and other famous personalities from the continent have also left their mark on the Green Legacy at Friendship Park, it has been learnt.
On Friday, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh met with former African footballers known for playing in the English Premier League and various European clubs, famous artists from the continent, influencers and famous designers who arrived in Ethiopia to participate at the Shenen Africa Festival.
