In a viral video, a Ghanaian is ecstatic as he proudly shows off how his Ghana Card helped him get on a flight home.
At the airport in Doula, Cameroon, the man, who was struggling to return home, described how the Ghana Card had become his “saviour”. “The Ghana Card is actually a passport. Skeptic Thomas should understand. I am currently at Doula airport in Cameroon struggling to get back to Ghana but I used my Ghana Card.”
“Kudos to the NPP government. Kudos to Dr Mahamudu Bawumia. May God bless Ghana richly and bless Dr Mahamudu Bawumia richly.”he said happily.
Ghana’s National Biometric Identity Card (also known as the Ghana Card) contains a machine-readable chip and serves as an international travel document recognized by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
As there are no e-visa service agreements between Ghana and many countries, Ghanaians are currently unable to use their Ghana Card to leave Ghana and travel to countries that require proof of entry visa.
However, Ghana Card holders can use it for travel to countries where Ghanaians can travel without an entry visa, such as West African countries.
Also, at any airport around the world, Ghanaians who have lost their passports can board a flight to Ghana using the Ghana Card.
When it was introduced over a year ago, some members of the opposition NDC party questioned whether the Ghana Card could function as an international travel document.
However, many Ghanaians have proven the naysayers wrong by providing concrete evidence that they use the app while travelling on various planes around the world.
