The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has expressed concern over sporadic incidents of violence recorded recently in some electoral processes leading up to the December general elections.
The GBA has warned that such incidents do not bode well as the country approaches general elections.
GBA president Yaw Acheapong Boafo urged young people to remain purposeful and resist being used by politicians as tools of violence.
He encouraged them not to put themselves at risk but to engage in activities that would improve the lives of themselves and their families.
Boafo made these remarks at the Rule of Law Martyrs Memorial Service which took place at the Cavalry Baptist Church on Sunday, June 30.
“To the youths who are constantly being used and manipulated by some in politics, I urge you to live purposefully in life, channel your energies into worthy causes and avoid being misled by unscrupulous politicians into acts that could destabilise the nation,” he said.
“I dare say you are worth more than a few Ghana cedis and a packet of cooked rice,” he said.
He also called on Ghanaians to safeguard the country’s democratic achievements and promote economic wellbeing for all.
“With just over five months to go until the 2024 general election, the stakes are sure to be even higher.”
“We cannot afford to deal with similar threats, violence, intimidation and vigilantism that threaten to affect peace and stability in Ghana and our overall efforts to consolidate our democratic achievements and accelerate economic development,” he added.
