Trainer Ebenezer Adjei aka ‘Killer’ has dedicated his life to boxing, seeing it as the foundation of his achievements and ambitions.
He is the head trainer at the Black Panthers gym and recently spoke about his deep connection to the sport on Omashi TV’s ‘The Big Fight Night’ program.
Coach Adjei highlighted the impact of boxing, citing how it has brought him recognition and offers opportunities for international travel. Despite his successes, he expressed concern over the challenges facing Ghana’s national boxing team, the Black Bombers, especially their failure to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
He attributed the team’s struggles to what he sees as inadequate support and preparation by sports authorities, including the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Ghana Olympic Committee, following the team’s impressive performance at the 13th African Games.
Expressing his disappointment, Coach Adjei stressed the need for proper motivation and training for the boxers, stressing the importance of professional treatment of the national team athletes.
In response to these challenges, Coach Adjei chose to guide his young boxers to turn professional early in their careers to ensure they receive the necessary support and training to succeed. It highlighted the potential of Ghanaian boxing with proper attention, investment and sponsorship.
Acknowledging his mentors and partners in the boxing community, Coach Adjei credited the likes of coaches Carl Lokko and Dr. Ofori Asare, as well as organizations such as the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) and the United Boxing Coaches Association.
Beyond boxing, Coach Adjei emphasized the importance of education for young athletes, ensuring they have opportunities to pursue academic excellence alongside their athletic careers. His dedication to the holistic development of athletes underscores his commitment to shaping boxing talent while preparing them for life beyond the ring.
As he continues to advocate for better conditions and support in Ghanaian boxing, Coach Adjei remains a critical figure in the sport, guiding promising talents like Alfred Lamptey and Michael Abban to international recognition and success.
โI believe in education and sports,โ said Coach Adjei, underlining his balanced approach to nurturing future champions and leaders in the Ghanaian sports landscape.
