Ibrahim Mahama, CEO of Engineers & Planners, Inc., donated 20 police vehicles and three generators (1,200 KVA) to the Liberia Airports Authority in Monrovia.
The generous donation was made in the presence of Liberia’s President Joseph Boakai and Vice President Jeremiah Kun.
In his presentation speech, Mr. Mahama expressed his deep ties with Liberia and his commitment to its development.
He said: “When I was here recently I realised the airport needed help. I remained unfazed and decided to work with Mark and Kamala who were very supportive, with the help of the vice president who kept reminding me over the head that there were no generators or cars on the way.”
“I didn’t expect it to come so soon, but I remembered they were here and I had to come. Liberia is like my home. If I escape Ghana, Liberia is my next destination.”
He added: “I don’t see myself as different from Liberians and I have been raised with Liberians all my life. We are all family here. So today I am trying to kill two birds with one stone. I also deployed many police vehicles to support the police chief and the police service.”
“We’re here today and we want to thank you for your support. This is just a small gift, but we hope to come back and work with you all again.”
President Boakai expressed his appreciation for Mr. Mahama’s contributions to Liberia’s development and assured that the donated items would be put to good use.
Beyond Ghana, Mahama’s company, E&P, has a major impact in Liberia: E&P was the first company to stimulate commercial mining activity in Liberia after the country’s long civil war, winning an iron ore concession for ArcelorMittal in Yekepa, Liberia.
The agreement provided jobs to Liberians and other African nationals, contributed to the Liberian economy through the payment of taxes and import duties, and facilitated the transfer of knowledge and skills, providing an experienced workforce for Liberia’s extractive industries.
E&P’s entry into Liberia was crucial because most of the workers had never worked before due to the civil war. E&P took on the responsibility of training young Liberians and providing them with formal work experience before other multinational companies could come to Liberia.
