Ghana’s top road contractor has taken exception to Professor Stephen Adei’s claim that contractors will pay GH¢1 million before awarding a road contract.
A former president of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) was recently caught in the media making this claim.
Because there was no evidence, he received widespread condemnation.
“We are keen to hear the heated debate in the media sector regarding former GIMPA President Professor Stephen Adei’s claims to the effect that some contractors are making upfront payments of GH¢1 million before signing road contracts. We have been watching closely,” the contractor said in a press release.
The release continued: “A press statement from the Ministry of Roads and Highways confirms that the Minister has requested the Director-General of the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) to investigate the allegations.”
“We would like to state clearly that none of us have had such experience,” they said, adding that “road contracts go through a process until an award is given.
“This process is well-known and transparent, making it very difficult for corruption to flourish in the allocation of road contracts.
“We wish to allay the concerns of Professor Addei and the general public and emphasize that no such bribes are paid for road contracts in Ghana,” they said.
They looked to the minister and said, “He has led the ministry with candor and professionalism. Not only that, he has brought discipline to the road construction sector.”
They have also, in the words of the Roads Minister, “deliberately built the capacity of local contractors to meet international standards, with the aim of relying on local capabilities and ensuring true independence.” I took my hat off to him.
Despite defending the contract awarding process, the contractors noted that “as members of the road contractor community, we will support the efforts of the investigative authorities to bring these allegations to a close.” . Therefore, we will be on hand to assist EOCO if invited. ”
