Buem MP Kofi Adams is pushing for the annual post-budget workshop to be held at Parliament House in Accra.
Every year, MPs are brought out of Accra for a residential workshop on the budget presented before debate and consideration.
Parliament has been informed that this year’s post-budget workshop will be held from Friday 17 November to Sunday 19 November 2023 at Rock City Hotel, Kwahu Nkwatia.
This comes after the 2024 budget statement and economic policy are submitted to parliament on November 15th.
However, speaking on the floor, the NDC lawmaker called on the House leadership to reconsider and hold workshops within the House to save money, citing recent economic hardships.
“The business committee needs to reconsider and consider the savings that can be made by holding workshops here. [Parlaiment]helps support many things.
“… some of this funding can be used to obtain water to support flood victims. I am trying to persuade leaders to consider this,” he appealed. .
However, Deputy Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo Malkin rejected his request.
He said he believes the request is simply an opportunistic and propaganda attempt to negatively influence Congress.
He added: “This is a committee decision and does not mean the leadership is insensitive.”
“I would encourage members to be mindful of their choice of words and their approach to these issues. Otherwise, I would say that I would not receive any salary as an MP and would spend all of it on community service. “Such an approach is inappropriate and was done to mislead the public, and we, the political class, are the victims.”
