The Fixing The Country movement has announced the cancellation of a protest planned in front of former President John Mahama’s Labone office.
In a press statement issued by its convener, Ernest Owusu Bempah, on Tuesday, November 21, the group disclosed that the decision to halt picketing was based on instructions from the Ministry of National Security.
The movement apologized to its members for the change in plans, while assuring them that it remains committed to ensuring that Mr Mahama is investigated by the special prosecutor over the Airbus scandal.
“The Movement to Order the Nation would like to inform the public that the demonstration and picketing at the cantonment office of former President John Mahama scheduled for Thursday, November 23rd has been canceled due to the official order of the Ministry of National Security. We want to let people know.”
“The National Security Agency informed our leadership that security considerations were recognized and the request was necessary, and we subsequently suspended the demonstration indefinitely.”
On October 16, 2023, the Fix the Nation Movement announced its intention to picket the office of the former President in exercise of its constitutional rights under Article 21(1)(d) and (f) of the 1992 Constitution. The police were notified.
The group then rescheduled the event to Thursday, November 16th, and then again to Thursday, November 23rd.
Organizers said the planned protest was aimed at reflecting the group’s antipathy towards the laid-back attitude of authorities investigating the Airbus corruption scandal.
They stressed that Mr Mahama had many questions to answer and the scandal could not be swept under the rug.
