A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) legal team, Mr. Godwin Edudji Tamakloe, said the cancellation of the teaching license examination did not mean a lack of teaching qualifications.
He argued that teacher training colleges cover up to 48 courses and do not require a final exam to prove qualifications.
Speaking on the Super Morning Show, he emphasized the need to include qualifications, licenses and certification guarantees as an integral part of the training process.
“Typically in teacher training, they say they’re going to do an apprenticeship. They go out and do an apprenticeship, sometimes for six months, before they get their A qualification. “At the end of the day, they come in, they come in. No one will tell you not to.”Before you can earn your Certificate A, you will need to take an additional exam. That used to be involved,” he said.
He says one of the barriers to entry into teacher training is concerns about benefits.
He explained that in the past, when fewer people chose teacher training, it was more practical to allocate budgets to provide allowances to trainees.
He said the government has a role in determining the number of people that teacher training institutions should hire and teacher training institutions must comply with it.
“At the beginning of this year, the government will now have to say to Atebubu Teachers Training College that they cannot enroll more than 200 students because only 200 will be given allowances. Do not take more than 200. Only take 200.”
He added that a significant number of teachers have migrated abroad as the allowance has become a barrier to entry and there will come a time when the country will face a teacher shortage.
