The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has refuted claims that military officers take pleasure in abusing civilians.
The military’s comments follow recent concerns over reported military atrocities in Ashaiman, Ghar, Ejura and other areas.
Brigadier General Charles Agyemang Prempeh, Commander of the Central Command of the Ghana Armed Forces, in an interview on Accra Base City TV, said the military’s commitment to maintaining peace in the country despite facing public criticism over its interactions with civilians. He emphasized unwavering commitment.
He maintained that the military’s main purpose is to maintain public safety and order and has no intention of engaging in atrocities against civilians.
“The military is not called in to brutalize civilians, but that is beside the point. We are called in to ensure that law and order is restored. “We are conducting these operations as part of our operations, and when we go out, we will use the minimum amount of force.”
Brigadier General Charles Agyemang Prempeh has cited concerns over alleged misconduct in the military, including involvement in activities such as armed robbery, and clarified that such conduct should not be generalized across the Ghanaian Armed Forces.
He underlined the military’s commitment to thoroughly investigate officers involved in such incidents and ensure appropriate sanctions are enforced if necessary.
“The military does not commit armed robbery. Individuals go out to do their own business. The military has a way of correcting violations, so when we become aware of these things, we follow our disciplinary procedures. “We will take the necessary steps to get involved and correct that person,” he said.
