Mr Nana Yaw Boadu, a presidential staffer, has filed his candidacy as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for the Asunafo North constituency against the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP), Mr Evans Opoku Bobi.
Opoku Bobby, who is also the deputy minister of youth and sports, faces strong opposition from the other three candidates.
Boadu filed his papers at the party’s constituency office in Goaso on Monday to the cheers of his supporters.
He suggested in an interview that it is once again time for delegates to vote out incumbents as their popularity plummets due to lack of development.
He said there were clear signs that the NPP could lose seats if it fails to make changes in its selection of parliamentary candidates.
“In the 2016 election, Nana Akufo-Addo and Opoku Bobby won with 7,000 votes each. In the 2020 election, Nana Akufo-Addo won with over 36,000 votes and Mr. Bobby won with over 36,000 votes. He won more than 34,000 votes. But the first-time winner of the National Democratic Congress narrowed the gap by 7,000 to 3,000 votes. What shows us that we won’t lose our seats if we vote for Bobby again? Are there any?” asked Boadu, a native of Mim.
He said changes were needed at the nuclear power plant north of Asunafo, just as in 2016, when Mr Bobby took office to increase his vote share, but lost votes again in 2020.
“What remains is for all delegates to change the party’s candidate and introduce a new face to Mr. Nana Yaw Boadu,” he said, adding that he is the best person to lead the party. Ta.
