The 48th Ghana Sports Writers Association Awards of Excellence was billed as a unique gathering that brought together former and current sports administrators, legends and stars across the country.
The Vice President of Ghana and flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party in the December Presidential Election, Alhaji Dr Mamodu Bawumia was among the very special guests at the event.
In his speech, the Vice President commended the Association for maintaining the unity of the sports community in the country for nearly five decades. He said he has always enjoyed covering sportswriters for many years.
He said they have always shown passion for unity in the country irrespective of differences in religion, political parties and even educational differences.
Enumerating the number of sports facilities that the administration of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo has developed and renovated to standard, he said their administration has developed sports facilities in the country more than any other government in Ghana.
The Vice President disclosed that the right to host all the African Games in Ghana is testimony to the love and commitment of their administration to sports development.
βThe All African Games that Ghana has been chosen to host is to tell you that we are committed to sports development. You will agree with me that Ghana has produced World champions in various sports and periods. We cannot afford to let our glory die. We will make the All African Games another milestone in the history of sports on the African continent,β he affirmed.

The Vice President used the occasion to charge the Black Stars who are currently in Cote d’voire for the CAF Cup of Nations to make the nation proud, stressing that the best is what is good for the country at the moment.
He laments that the Nations Cup trophy has eluded the country for many years, noting that, βwe have witnessed a situation where Ghana was very close to winning the prestigious trophy but victory eluded us.
“I know all Ghanaians are behind the Black Stars, I am sure they will go into the competition with high spirits and we are all praying for them to be victorious.”
He commended the President of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana, Mr. Kwabena Yeboah and his team for their hard work in giving adequate coverage to Ghanaian sports. He told the gathering that Ghana is fully prepared to host the Pan African Games.
The President of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG), Mr. Kwabena Yeboah thanked the Vice President for the support he personally extended to SWAG members. He said the Vice President was personally awarding the best sports writer of the year.
He assured the Vice President that his members will not relent in promoting sports in the country.
