Ghana’s vibrant FinTech industry landscape has taken center stage at the FinTech Islands event in Barbados.
A delegation from Ghana consisting of Mr. Martin Kwame Awagah and Mr. Richard Nunekpekuboth from the Ghana FinTech and Payments Association, represent the digital financial ecosystem.
Mr. Awagah, President of the Association, kicked off proceedings with a panel session on “Banks for all of us: FinTech Innovation Driving Financial Inclusion.” His insights shed light on Ghana’s commitment to harnessing technology to promote financial inclusion on a wider scale. He looked at how government policies such as the National Financial Inclusion Development Strategy (NFIDS), the Digital Finance Policy of Services and the Cashlite Roadmap have set the scene for the digital economic evolution of the country.
He further stated, “…these policies have tremendously transformed the delivery of financial services and we are even witnessing the provision of services in local languages, which ensures that financial access is not a barrier for the less educated. These solutions reach millions of citizens in various sectors of the economy, thereby enhancing financial inclusion.”
Panelists joining Mr. Awagah were Mr. Zachary Harding (Founding Partner, Delta Capital Partners – Caribbean), Mr. Juan Zavala Aleman (CEO and Co-Founder, FinZi – Columbia) and Ms. Zia Patton (PwC Partner, Digital Services – Caribbean).
This was followed by Mr. Nunekpeku, Vice President of Legal and Strategy of the Association, who contributed significantly to the discussion on “Fintechs are driving the adoption of digital moneyas panel moderator. On this panel he was Adam SwartzbaughFounder and CEO of Almond Finance, and Aldwin Wayne, Founder and CEO, Color Bank and WiPay. His insights highlighted the central role that fintech companies are playing in driving the widespread adoption of digital currencies such as cryptocurrencies and stablecoins.
At the climax of the day’s event, Mr. Awagah shared the stage with Mr. Kwame OppongDirector of Fintech and Innovation at the Bank of Ghana, who joined virtually, with Ms. Carmelle CadetFounder and CEO of EMTECH, a renowned hyper-tech platform at the forefront of digitalization of regulatory processes, in a fascinating discussion titled “CBDC Masterclass: Lessons Learned from the eCedi Hackathon.” This insightful session delves into the intricacies of implementing a Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC), drawing lessons from Ghana’s pioneering eCedi.
