Luis Enrique has warned Paris Saint-Germain to prepare for an attack on Newcastle as the two teams go head-to-head. Champions League Group F on Tuesday night.
Enrique put the finishing touches to his plan to avenge his side’s 4-1 defeat at St James’ Park in October in a rainy Poissy on Monday morning, having paid close attention to the Magpies’ Premier League demolition of Chelsea League.
Eddie Howe’s men were 13 men short on Saturday but still ran out 4-1 winners in a performance that impressed the PSG boss.
Enrique said: “If you saw the last game against Chelsea, physically it’s really incredible. Six players apply so much pressure that they can pressure eight players at once.
“That intensity in their game and that pressure is something we have to be prepared for.”
The Ligue 1 champions were well beaten on Tyneside as goals from Miguel Almiron, Dan Burn, Sean Longstaff and Fabian Schar opened the group.
However, Enrique’s men go into their penultimate clash knowing a win could see them through to the knockout stages and while he is understandably wary of Newcastle, that is his focus.
He said: “The competition could be very short, it’s a very complicated group and the rankings are very close as you can see.
“It’s true that now every game is decisive, it’s a knockout. Two teams could qualify as early as tomorrow night depending on the results, so until the final day, we don’t know.
“I’m sure my team is ready, though, ready to play, to be competitive on the field and we’ve been showing that throughout the season.”
PSG have lost just once in all competitions since their horror show at St James – at AC Milan in their last European outing – and beat Monaco 5-2 on Friday night.
However, Portuguese midfielder Vitinia admits there is a score to be settled against the English club.
Vitinha said: “We spoke after that match. We knew it wasn’t a great result for us, of course. It was a very tough game and we know it’s another tough game tomorrow night ahead of us, but we still want to win.
“Maybe we have that little feeling of revenge, but that stays with us. Tomorrow will be a show and that we will win, that is the most important thing.
“We know it’s possible to qualify as quickly as tomorrow, but we’re just trying to focus on this match and this match only because the only way to qualify is to win, so that’s what we’re trying to focus on. .
“We have to respect what the coach is asking us and try to do everything to win this match and have a good position in this group.”
